What is BS EN 157464 about?

BS EN 157464 is the fourth part in the multi-series of documents that is applicable to road-rail machines and associated equipment. BS EN 157464 specifies the technical requirements to minimize the specific railway hazards of self-propelled road-rail machines – henceforward referred to as machines – and associated equipment, intended for use on the urban rail. These hazards can arise during the commissioning, operation, and maintenance of machines when carried out in accordance with the specification given by the manufacturer or his authorized representative.

Note: BS EN 157464 does not apply to the following:

  • The requirements for quality of the work or performance of the machine
  • The specific requirements established by the machine operator for the use of machines, which will be the subject of negotiation between the manufacturer and the Urban Rail Manager
  • Moving and working while not on rails
  • Separate machines temporarily mounted on machines and associated equipment

Note: BS EN 157464 does not establish the additional requirements for the following:

  • Operation subject to special rules, e.g., potentially explosive atmospheres
  • Hazards due to natural causes, e.g., earthquake, lightning, flooding
  • Working methods
  • Operation in severe working conditions requiring special measures, e.g., extreme environmental conditions such as freezing temperatures, high temperatures, corrosive environments, tropical environments, contaminating environments, strong magnetic fields
  • Hazards occur when used to handle suspended loads that may swing freely

Who is BS EN 157464 for?

BS EN 157464on road-rail machines and associated equipment is useful for:

  •    Railway machine and equipment manufacturers
  •    Railway management authorities
  •    Train operating companies (TOC)s
  •    Site supervisors
  •    Inspection and testing department in railways
  •    Mechanical engineers

Why should you use BS EN 157464?

The use of rail for the transportation of products, merchandise, and people is growing. As a result, the rail infrastructure wears out faster, necessitating more maintenance work, shorter repair intervals, and less track availability to carry out maintenance work.

BS EN 15746-4 provides the technical criteria for reducing the unique railway dangers of self-propelled road-rail machines and associated equipment designed for operation on the urban rail.

BS EN 15746-4 addresses the machinery in question, as well as the extent to which risks, hazardous conditions, and hazardous occurrences are considered.

BS EN 15746-4 specifies the requirements that equipment must follow in order to provided necessary safety from hazards and accidents and prevent incidences of derailment of tracks. Moreover, the guidelines can help ensure of operational efficiency of the overall railway system, irrespective of loads and distance.
