What is ISO 11127‑3 about?

ISO 11127‑3 is the third part of the ISO 11127 multi-series, and discusses steel substrates. ISO 11127‑3 specifies a method for the determination of the apparent density of non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives. These abrasives are used for steel substrate preparation before it is painted.

ISO 11127‑3 deals with the sampling and testing of non-metallic abrasives for blast cleaning steel substrates so that they are ready to be painted.

Note 1: The types of non-metallic abrasives and requirements for each are contained in the ISO 11126 series.

Note 2: The ISO 11126 and ISO 11127 series have been drafted as a coherent set of International Standards on non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives.

Who is ISO 11127‑3 for?

ISO 11127‑3 on steel substrate preparation before application of paints is useful for:

  • The automotive industry
  • Steel furniture manufacturers
  • Steel toy manufacturers
  • Steel utensil manufacturers
  • Paint Manufacturers
  • Manufacturers of abrasives
  • Painters

Why should you use ISO 11127‑3?

Apparent density is one method of calculating the particle sizes of abrasives. If the apparent density is low, it means that the abrasive consists of finer/small particles. If the apparent density is high, it means that the abrasive consists of large-sized particles.

ISO 11127‑3 provides you with a pycnometer method for the determination of the apparent density of non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives. ISO 11127‑3 guides you through the test procedure to ensure the classification and segregation of non-metallic abrasives based on their apparent density.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN ISO 11127‑3:2021 supersedes BS EN ISO 11127‑3:2011, which is withdrawn. BS EN ISO 11127‑3:2021 includes some technical and editorial changes with respect to BS EN ISO 11127‑3:2011. These include:

  • In Clause 7, the procedure has been modified by allowing the pycnometer and water to stabilize to room temperature; the temperature of the test is recorded
  • The spelling of pycnometer has been corrected throughout the document
  • Annex A has been technically and editorially revised
