What is ISO 294-3 about?

ISO 294-3 is the third of a multi-series on plastics. ISO 294-3 discusses thermoplastic plate injection moulding. ISO 294-3 specifies two two-cavity moulds, the type D11, and D12 ISO moulds, for the injection moulding of small plates measuring 60 mm × 60 mm with a preferred thickness of 1 mm (type D11) or 2 mm (type D12), which can be used for a variety of tests.

The moulds can additionally be fitted with inserts for studying the effects of weld lines on the mechanical properties.

Who is ISO 294-3 for?

ISO 294-3 on thermoplastic plate injection moulding is useful for:

  • Manufacturers of thermoplastic products
  • Designers of thermoplastic products

Why should you use ISO 294-3?

Thermoplastic injection moulding is a manufacturing process that creates fully functional parts by injecting plastic resin into a pre-made mould. ISO 294-3 specifies the required information on conducting the thermoplastic plate injection moulding test. Thermoplastic injection moulding is ideal for testing producing high volumes of plastic parts because several parts can be produced in each cycle by using a multi-cavity injection mould.

Using the tests elaborated in ISO 294-3, you can assess the suitability of thermoplastic materials for your manufacturing needs.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN ISO 294-3:2020 supersedes ISO 294-3:2002. BS EN ISO 294-3:2020 includes some editorial changes concerning ISO 294-3:2002. These include:

  • The requirement in apparatus have been clarified
  • the position of hG in Details of type D11 and D12 ISO moulds has been corrected
