What is ISO 12944-5-Protective paint systems about?

ISO 12944 discusses paint and varnishes. ISO 12944-5 is the fifth part of ISO 12944 multi-series and discusses protective paint systems for steel structures. Paint is a mechanically bonded surface coating that provides a barrier film between steel and the environment.

ISO 12944-5 provides concise, clear, up-to-date, and comprehensive instructions to ensure effective corrosion protection. ISO 12944-5 gives guidelines for the selection of paint systems available for different environments (see ISO 129442) except for corrosivity category CX and category Im4 as defined in ISO 129442 and different surface preparation grades (see ISO 129444), and the durability grade to be expected (see ISO 129441).

Who is ISO 12944-5-Protective paint systems for?

ISO 12944-5 on paints and varnishes is (Protective paint systems for steel corrosion) useful for:

  • Structural fabricators and engineers
  • Thermal sprayers
  • Galvanizers
  • Coating and paint manufacturers
  • Companies carrying out corrosion protection work
  • Companies owning steel structures, e.g. offshore steel structures
  • Planners
  • Consultants
  • Inspectors of protective coatings

Why should you use ISO-12944-5 Protective paint systems

Unprotected steel in the atmosphere, in water and in soil is subjected to corrosion that may lead to damage. Therefore, to avoid corrosion damage, steel structures are normally protected to withstand the corrosion stresses during the required service life required of the structure.

There are different ways of protecting steel structures from corrosion.

ISO 12944 (all parts) deals with protection by paint systems and covers, in the various parts, all features that are important in achieving adequate corrosion protection. Additional or other measures are possible but require agreement between the interested parties.

ISO 12944-5 describes the types of paint and paint systems commonly used for corrosion protection of steel structures. ISO 12944-5 gives some terms and definitions related to painting systems in combination with guidance for the selection of different types of protective paint systems.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN ISO 12944-5:2018 supersedes BS EN ISO 12944-5:2007, which is withdrawn. BS EN ISO 12944-5:2018 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN ISO 12944-5:2007. These include:

  • A new normative annexe for “Minimum requirements for protective systems”
  • New types of coatings (poly aspartic, fluoropolymer, fluoroethylene/vinyl ether co-polymer and polysiloxanes)
  • Descriptions for intermediate coats and topcoats
  • New informative annexes on “Paint systems on hot-dip galvanized steel” and “Paint systems on thermal-sprayed metallic coatings”
