What is ISO 23598 about?

ISO 23598 specifies the geometry of test specimens and the testing procedure for mechanized peel testing of single mechanical joints on single-lap test specimens up to a single sheet thickness of 4,5 mm. The term “sheet”, as used in ISO 23598, includes extrusions, and cast materials.

The purpose of the mechanized peel tests is to determine the mechanical characteristics and the failure modes of the joints made with different joining methods.

Note: ISO 23598 does not apply to civil engineering applications such as metal buildings and steel constructions which are covered by other applicable standards.

Who is ISO 23598 for?

ISO 23598 on destructive testing of welded joints is applicable to:

  • Construction, automotive, mechanical Industries
  • Sheet metal manufacturers
  • Manufacturers of pressure vessels
  • Manufacturers of aircraft & aerospace
  • Shipbuilding industry

Why should you use ISO 23598?

ISO 23598 provides guidelines on specimen dimensions and testing which helps to determine the mechanical properties and characteristics and the failure modes of welded joints. The guidelines of ISO 23598 helps improve the performance of welded joints to withstand extreme conditions.

Applying guidelines of ISO 23598 in manufacturing processes of welding improves weld quality and profitability of welded products by providing guidelines for destructive testing procedures of welded joints.
