What is BS EN IEC 60404-11 about?

BS EN IEC 60404-11 is the 11th-part of the multi-series of international standard on magnetic alloys and steels.

BS EN IEC 60404-11 is applicable to electrical steel strip and sheet insulated by coating on one or both sides.

The main objective of BS EN IEC 60404-11 is to define the general principles and technical details of the measurement of the surface insulation resistance of electrical steel strips and sheets.

NOTE: This test is suitable for manufacturing and quality control in the application of insulation coatings.

Who is BS EN IEC 60404-11 for?

BS EN IEC 60404-11 on magnetic materials is relevant to:

  • Manufacturers and suppliers of magnetic steel strip and sheet
  • Magnet materials manufacturers and suppliers
  • Metal industry
  • Manufacturers of various electrical and machinery applications
  • Power distribution and automotive industry
  • Electrical engineers
  • Fabricators
  • Welders

Why should you use BS EN IEC 60404-11?

Electrical steel is widely used across industries and is known for its electromagnetic properties.

BS EN IEC 60404-11 covers a principle of the measurement which is based on, and includes, the method, which characterizes one coated surface at a time.

BS EN IEC 60404-11 takes you through the measurement procedure and the evaluation of surface insulation resistance. C is the coefficient of surface insulation resistance for one coated surface of the test specimen, the calculation and formula for which is provided.

As a result of compliance with BS EN IEC 60404-11, you will be able to make the right selection of magnetic materials for insulation, thereby ensuring high efficiency and lower losses in electrical applications.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN IEC 60404-11:2021 and replaces the first edition published in 1991. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:

  • Method B has been deleted and the measurement of individual currents through each contact button is enabled by Method A
  • An improved arrangement of the test apparatus and the voltage stabilizing circuit for Method A, “Arrangement B”, is introduced
  • An alternative layout using two pairs of contact assemblies in opposing positions of the test specimen is introduced
  • The restriction: “The same area of the test specimen shall not be used to test both sides.” has been deleted
