What is BS EN 13953 about?

BS EN 13953 is a document on LPG equipment and accessories. BS EN 13953 specifies the design, testing and marking requirements for spring-loaded pressure relief valves (PRV), for use in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders of water capacity of 0,5 l up to and including 150 l.

BS EN 13953 calls for the use of substances and procedures that may be injurious to health and/or the environment if adequate precautions are not taken. BS EN 13953 refers only to technical suitability.

Who is BS EN 13953 for?

BS EN 13953 on LPG equipment and accessories is useful for:

  • LPG equipment manufacturers
  • Valve manufacturers
  • Research and development facilities
  • Design engineers

Why should you use BS EN 13953?

BS EN 13953 implementation on LPG equipment and accessories introduces a pressure relief valve for transportable refillable cylinders for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) which automatically, without the assistance of any energy other than that of the vapour concerned, discharges vapour at a predetermined pressure.

The more specified function of LPG equipment mentioned in BS EN 13953 is that these valves are designed to open at a pre-set pressure and discharge fluid until the pressure drops to acceptable levels.

Implementation of BS EN 13953 on LPG equipment and accessories is beneficial for you as this design protects life and property by venting fluid from an over-pressurized vessel.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 13953:2020 supersedes BS EN 13953:2015. BS EN 13953:2020 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 13953:2015. These include:

  • Addition of water capacity range in the scope
  • Addition of requirements for rubber material
  • Change to the nominal set pressure
  • Clarification to discharge capacity test
  • Clarification to an endurance test
