What is BS EN 60751- Platinum resistors and thermometers about?

BS EN 60751 is an international standard that discusses the uses of industrial platinum resistance thermometers and platinum temperature sensors.

BS EN 60751 specifies the requirements and temperature/resistance relationship for industrial platinum resistance temperature sensors later referred to as “platinum resistors” or "resistors" and industrial platinum resistance thermometers later referred to as "thermometers" whose electrical resistance is a defined function of temperature.

BS EN 60751 covers resistors or thermometers for all or part of the temperature range -200 °C to +850 °C with different tolerance classes, which may cover restricted temperature ranges.

Note: The specification of such equations is outside the scope of BS EN 60751

Who is BS EN 60751- Platinum resistors and thermometers for?

BS EN 60751 on platinum resistors and thermometers is relevant to:

  • Manufacturers of industrial platinum resistance thermometers
  • Manufacturers of platinum temperature sensors
  • Manufacturers of electrical measurement instruments
  • Electrical engineers
  • Regulatory authorities
  • Testing authorities

Why should you use BS EN 60751- Platinum resistors and thermometers?

A platinum resistance thermometer (PRT) is a temperature-responsive device that consists of one or more sensing platinum resistors within a protective sheath, internal connecting wires, and external terminals to permit the connection of electrical measurement instruments.

BS EN 60751 gives you the temperature ranges of valid tolerance classes for resistors based on the work experience with film and wire resistors showing that in these ranges most resistors can maintain their tolerances and other performance characteristics.

BS EN 60751 specifies the resistors and thermometers that are constructed in such a manner that they are suitable for use in measuring systems for direct current or alternating current at frequencies up to 100 Hz.

BS EN 60751 gives you test methods that help you verify and prove that resistors or thermometers are in compliance with the global standard requirements.

By applying, BS EN 60751 you can learn about industrial platinum resistance thermometers and platinum temperature sensors, which can be beneficial for your business and can help you to expand your business globally.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 60751:2008 supersedes BS EN 60751:1996 which is withdrawn.

BS EN 60751:2008 replaces the first edition published in 1983, amendment 1 (1986) and amendment 2 (1995). BS EN 60751:2008 constitutes a technical revision.

The significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition are as follows:

  • Tolerance classes follow a new scheme
  • Tolerance acceptance test is included
  • Hysteresis test is included
  • Several changes in the individual tests
  • Appendices are deleted
