What is BS EN 1673 about?
BS EN 1673 discusses about Food processing machinery. BS EN 1673:2020 specifies safety and hygiene requirements for the design and manufacture of rotary rack ovens which can be used with one or more mobile racks.
Note1: BS EN 1673 applies to ovens used only for food products except for those containing volatile flammable ingredients (volatile organic compound, e.g., alcohol, oil, …).
Note2: BS EN 1673 applies to ovens where the steam is generated by an evaporation process of drinking water on hot surfaces.
Note3: The following machines are excluded:
- Experimental and testing machines under development by the manufacturer
- Machines for non-professional uses
Note4: BS EN 1673 covers the technical safety requirements for the transport, installation, operation, cleaning, and maintenance of these machines.
Note5: BS EN 1673 deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations, and events relevant to rotary rack ovens when they are used as intended and under conditions of misuse which are reasonably foreseeable by the manufacturer.
Note6: The following hazards are not covered by BS EN 1673:
- Hazards from the use of gaseous fuel by gas appliances
- Hazards arising from electromagnetic compatibility issues
- Hazards from the use of trays made of or coated by silicone
- Hazards due to dismantling, disabling, and scrapping
Note7: BS EN 1673 does not deal with noise emitted by the machine.
Note8: BS EN 1673 is not applicable to rotary rack ovens that were manufactured before the date of its publication as an EN.
Who is BS EN 1673 for?
BS EN 1673 on rotary rack ovens is useful for:
- Rotary rack oven manufacturers and suppliers
- Food manufacturers
- Health and safety bodies Service providers
- Consumers
Why should you use BS EN 1673?
Rotary rack ovens are intended for professional use in the food industry and workshops (bakeries, pastry making, etc.) for the batch baking of foodstuffs containing flour, water, and other ingredients and/or additives.
The oven provides high quality of a wide range of uniformly baked goods.
BS EN 1673 provides safety requirements that you need to follow while designing, manufacturing, of the rotary rack ovens. BS EN 1673 ensures that confirming to these requirements will produce durable and standardized rotary rack ovens.
BS EN 1673 provides hygiene requirements and instruction regarding the installation, provision for cleaning and maintenance. BS EN 1673 will ensure the safety of the users during machine use and the oven will last longer.
The machinery concerned and the extent to which hazards, hazardous situations, or hazardous events are covered are indicated in the Scope of BS EN 1673.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN 1673:2020 supersedes BS EN 1673:2000+A1:2009, which is withdrawn.
BS EN 1673:2020 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 1673:2000+A1:2009. These include:
- Upgraded list of significant hazards and danger zones removed
- Safety requirements were revised regarding the new list of significant hazards (steam emission, hot surfaces, etc.)
- New clause regarding environmental aspects
- Revised to be in line with European Commission recommendation
