What is BS EN 60079-29-1:2016+A1:2022 about?

This is the first of four standards in Part 29 of the international series on explosive atmospheres. Part 29-1 covers general requirements for constructing and testing gas detectors that detect and measure flammable gas or vapour concentrations with air. BS EN 60079-29-1:2016+A1:2020 is the 2020 amendment of the 2016 standard.

Who is BS EN 60079-29-1:2016+A1:2022 for?

  • Underground mines
  • Oil & gas production and processing plants, onshore and offshore platforms, FPSO (Floating Production Storage Offloading vessels)
  • Oil and gas tankers, drilling ships
  • Oil refineries
  • Petrochemical and chemical processing plants
  • Gas pipelines and distribution centres
  • Re-fuelling stations or petrol stations
  • Surface coating industries
  • Sewerage treatment plants

Why should you use BS EN 60079-29-1:2016+A1:2022?

It specifies general requirements for construction, testing and performance, and describes the test methods that apply to portable, transportable and fixed equipment for the detection and measurement of flammable gas or vapour concentrations with air.

Such equipment, or parts thereof, is intended for use in explosive atmospheres and in mines susceptible to firedamp.

BS EN 60079-29-1:2016+A1:2022 specifically applies to flammable gas detection equipment with a measuring range up to any volume fraction as declared by the manufacturer, and that is intended to provide an indication, alarm or other output function; the purpose of which is to indicate a potential explosion hazard and in some cases, to initiate automatic or manual protective action(s).

It applies to equipment, including the integral sampling systems of aspirated equipment, intended to be used for commercial, industrial and non-residential safety applications.

Only equipment with very short optical paths intended for use where the concentration is uniform over the optical path is within the scope of this standard.

For equipment used for sensing the presence of multiple gases, this part of BS EN 60079-29 applies only to the detection of flammable gas or vapour. It supplements and modifies the general requirements of BS EN 60079-0.

NOTE 1: BS EN 60079-29-1 is intended to provide for the supply of equipment giving a level of safety and performance suitable for general purpose applications. However, for specific applications, a prospective purchaser (or an appropriate authority) can additionally require the equipment to be submitted to particular tests or approval.

What’s new about BS EN 60079-29-1:2016+A1:2022?

This standard replaces BS EN 60079-29-1:2016. Amendments have been made to the following sub clauses in Section 5 on test methods:

  • 5.2.2.1 General – clarification of what to do when a test sample ceases to function during the test sequence
  • 5.2.2.3 Sequence – identification of tests which need to be conducted sequentially
  • 5.4.21.1 Test – additional testing variables provided
  • 5.4.21.2 Performance criteria – addition of new clause demonstrating hierarchical performance criteria associated with the detection and measurement of gas
