What is ISO 8407 about?

ISO 8407 discusses about Corrosion of metals and alloys. ISO 8407 specifies procedures for the removal of corrosion products formed on metal and alloy corrosion test specimens during their exposure in corrosive environments.

ISO 8407 includes general procedures, chemical procedures, electrolytic procedures and mechanical procedures for removing the corrosion from the metals and their alloys.

Note: Procedures given in ISO 8407 can also be applied to metal coatings in some cases, providing the possible effects from the substrate are considered

Who is ISO 8407 for?

ISO 8407 on corrosion of metals and alloys is applicable to:

  • Manufacturers of metal and alloy components
  • Test Conductors

Why should you use ISO 8407?

Corrosion is a natural process that transforms refined metals into more chemically stable forms such oxide, hydroxide, carbonate, or sulfide. It is the degradation of materials over time as a result of chemical and/or electrochemical reactions with their surroundings.

ISO 8407 gives you procedures that are designed to remove all corrosion from the products without removing of base metal significantly. This allows you to determine the mass loss of the metal accurately, which occurred during exposure to the corrosive environment. Thus, you can cope up with problematic corrosion with the minimum loss of metals and their alloys.

ISO 8407 provides you guidance on removal of corrosion products via procedure such as chemical procedures, electrolytic procedures and mechanical procedures which enhance the corrosion resistance properties of metals. Thus, as a buyer of ISO 8407, you will be able to bring together a standardized system of carrying out efficient, safe and reliable procedures while taking maximum benefit out of metals and alloys.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN ISO 8407:2021 supersedes BS EN ISO 8407:2014, which is now withdrawn.

Changes in BS EN ISO 8407:2021 includes technical revisions –

  • Table A.1 has been revised to include current chemical cleaning procedures for the removal of corrosion products
